3 Mistakes You’re Making When Trying to Lose Weight on The Paleo/Primal Diet

Even if you follow a paleo or primal diet, you can struggle to lose weight if you have certain habits. Both the paleo and the primal diet are diets where you cut out processed foods and processed sugar, as well as grains like oats, grains, and rice. The difference between a paleo and a primal diet is that the primal diet allows you to still consume a bit of dairy, while the paleo diet recommends that you do not consume them. The main focus of each diet, however, is to only consume natural foods.

Mistake #1: Eating Healthy Food in Excess

I laughed when I gained weight while only eating meat for a month on the carnivore diet and while not consuming any carbohydrates or sugar at all. Even without eating sugar, you could still gain weight if you eat too much and too frequently.

Many people switch to a whole foods diet when trying to lose weight, but do not consider how much they are eating and are shocked when, a few weeks later, they have not lost any weight, or worse, they have gained weight in the process.

Perhaps you have made a few fat bomb recipes that you found on Pinterest, which satisfy your sweet tooth, but if you have been eating 20 of them in a day, your calorie intake will be quite high, and you will struggle to lose weight or even gain.

The paleo or primal diet does help you lose weight if you do still eat food in reasonable amounts, because it helps correct your hormones that are needed for weight loss by reducing the amount of processed food and sugar that you consume.

Mistake #2: Not Focusing on Sugar or Insulin

Lowering insulin is still crucial when it comes to losing weight, because having high insulin levels means that more fat will be stored in your body when it cannot use all of the available glucose. You can eat whole foods diet that consists of around 90% carbohydrates, which is one of the worst things that you can do when trying to lose weight.

You can also consume way too much fruit, which is high in a type of sugar known as fructose. Fructose actually goes through the intestines to the liver, where it starts producing fat, and you can develop non-alcoholic fatty liver disease just from eating too much fruit or drinking too much fruit juice.

Eating too much meat and protein can also be harmful to your health, even if you are on a whole foods diet. The body can only absorb a certain amount of protein at a time, and when you consume protein in excess, it can actually damage your kidneys permanently. Too much protein will also force your body to turn the excess protein into glucose for energy through a process called gluconeogenesis. Therefore, eating too much protein can actually raise your insulin levels and make it a lot harder for you to lose weight.

Mistake #3: Eating Boring Foods or Follow a Boring Diet Even When Paleo/Primal

Another mistake that people make when trying the paleo or primal diet to improve their health or lose weight is to eat boring foods or to cook their food in a boring way. You can follow a whole foods diet by just eating chicken breasts, sweet potato, and steamed broccoli with each meal, and maybe a little bit of olive oil, which still sounds delicious, because as I’m writing this, I am quite hungry.

But, if you eat that for each meal, it will be very boring, and you will not be motivated to stick to a primal or paleo diet, and indulgent junk foods like doughnuts and pizza will start to look even better. What you should do is find healthy alternatives for all of your favourite meals, and to experiment with different healthy cooking methods, but just to make sure that the ingredients you use are healthy and whole. If you have a sweet tooth, but you are denying yourself these indulgences, because you think that it is not possible on a whole foods diet, that is either going to fail or you will be miserable.

I do recommend that you check out Pinterest, because you will be pleasantly surprised to know that losing weight and being healthy on a whole foods diet does not have to mean suffering. You can be healthy and still have dessert on a daily basis and even at every meal.

I have dessert three times a day. The secret to making it as easy as possible is to make primal and paleo desserts in advance through meal prepping. If you spend an hour in the kitchen while listening to a podcast, you can easily make two types of paleo treats that you can freeze, and two that can go in the fridge to be consumed over the next few days. By doing this, you can make enough dessert to last you for two weeks to a month, depending on how bad your sweet tooth is.

If you have been making one of these mistakes on the paleo or primal diet, you at least have the power to act differently from now on. You do not have to eat perfectly 100% of the time, but the more you do, the better your weight-loss results will be.
